Our Backyard in Spring
As much as I might feel inclined to complain about the cold we've faced (for so long!), it is hard not to smile when your kids know how to embrace it! :)

Ideas for a Detested Task: Lunch-Packing
Packing school lunches
is not my favorite thing to do. I
always do it the night before, after the kids have been tucked into bed. Most nights, there is nothing I would like more
than to skip this task and to retire to the couch with a hot tea and a good
book. However, the thought of the
alternative—scrambling in the morning to make four lunches, with awake children
expressing preferences—easily motivates me to endure this late-hour assignment.
Despite my aversion to
lunch-packing, I do feel that I have become quite accomplished at providing a broad
variety of (mostly) healthy options. Besides
my own brain-storming in response to the needs/desires of my own four children,
I benefit from exposure to other parental food offerings, which I observe at
the lunchtime of Pollywog Preschool. So--for
all you other reluctant lunch-packing parents, here are a few ideas from the Tapper house. Some of these are probably standards in your
repetoire, but perhaps you might find a few new ideas…and if you have any other
suggestions, I would love to hear!
COLD LUNCH IDEAS
Traditional bread sandwiches
(meat & cheese; hummus and vegetable; Wow butter & banana; Wow butter
& jelly; tuna, egg, or other meat salad; leftover sloppy joe or taco meat)
Wraps and pitas (see
above; plus we like to include lots of veggies and different sauces in the
wraps)
Pasta Salad (Leftover
pasta? Add some yummies—tuna, pepperoni,
leftover chunks of meat, chunks of cheese, fresh veggies, some canned beans,
etc. Mix with mayo or another dressing
(All my kids like Zesty Italian!) I have
also done rice salads and potato salads, but the pasta salads tend to be the
favorites.)
Eggs (Plain
hard-boiled; my boys particularly love deviled eggs…especially if I add a
little red curry to the yolk mix…)
Cereal and Yogurt (I
just put a bit of cereal or granola in one container and keep the yogurt
separate, so they can mix it during their lunch time.)
Bagels (with cream cheese…or
make a “full” sandwich!)
Sushi (only Jadon will
eat this at my house L)
HOT LUNCH IDEAS (We
love our Fuel thermoses!)
Leftovers! (Just heat
in the morning and add to preheated thermoses!
Lasagna, spaghetti and meatballs, meatballs and rice, mac’n’cheese, and shepherd’s
pie are some Tapper favorites.)
Soups, Stews, and
Chilis
Over-night Slow Cooker
Meals (I will sometimes throw some chopped potatoes, sausage, and veggies in
the slow cooker overnight…then just add to thermoses in the morning.)
Octopus on the Beach
(Okay, the nutritional value of this one might not be quite up to snuff…but my
kids like this on occasion. It does
demand some morning prep of Minute Rice and boiled hotdogs (with the “legs”
carefully cut from one end of each hotdog).
I add a small container of ketchup and/or mustard for dipping.)
ON THE SIDE (This list could go on
forever…but I’ll add a few of our regulars…)
Fresh veggies
(carrots, cucumbers, peppers, etc.)
Fresh fruit (apples,
oranges, bananas, kiwi, grapes, berries, melon, etc.)
Crackers and cheese
Packaged chips or
crackers
Pretzels
Homemade muffins,
scones, or cookies
Applesauce
Yogurt
Dried fruit (raisins,
cranberries, prunes, etc./Seeds (sunflower, pumpkin, etc.)
Granola Bars (a
favorite homemade recipe can be found here!)
Dry Cereal
Now, what I won't say is "Enjoy your lunch-packing!" but I will wish you all new insights into the dreaded task. Please, feel free to return the favor!

7 Things You Might Not Know About Our Favorite 7-Year-Old Tapper
It's Jadon's Birthday! Time to celebrate our little man!
1.
Jadon’s
favourite sport is basketball. He cheers
for LeBron James and the Miami Heat.
Recently, Mike took him to an Ottawa Skyhawks game at Canadian Tire
Centre, and one of the reasons for Jadon’s love of the game became clearer. At hockey games (the most prevalent spectator
event in our family schedule), a fan gets to cheer a few times a game.
But with basketball, there are dozens and dozens of cheering
opportunities—perfect for one excitable little guy!
2.
Jadon has
the most wonderful skin. He has
literally had little friends’ hands rubbing his arms, exclaiming about how soft
he feels. Fortunately, he’s not the kind of guy who can’t
stand anything touchy-feely!
3.
Jadon is a
budding magician. He received “Easy-to-DoCard Tricks for Children” by Karl Fulves for Christmas. He’s learned a few so far and really enjoys
pulling them out for family and friends who visit.
4.
Jadon
hates to be alone, especially in the dark.
Even just the dark of the upstairs in the evening. Avoids it at all costs. If I had a loonie for every time I heard, “Would
you please come with me?”…
5.
Jadon has
several nicknames: J.D., Jadonious, Jadonator, J-man, and Snort…which leads me
to…
6.
Jadon
snores. Often and occasionally very
loudly. A doctor at CHEO once told us
that he has an extraordinarily long palette, which shouldn’t really be
problematic, but may contribute to the snoring.
7.
Jadon has
a new favourite colour. He has always
said that yellow was his favourite, but he has made a switch. Neon green is now the preferred shade.
Of course, if you know
Jadon, you already know that he is an incredibly fun-loving, smart, and talkative
guy. He really loves being with other
people. He also loves learning, hates
being wrong, and gets a big kick out of puns.
He can drive you crazy with all his wiggly, jiggly energy or his incessant
chatter, but melt your heart with his grandiose displays of affection or
sincerely expressed desire to be helpful.
We have no doubt that God has some very special stuff in store for Jadon
Tapper!
Happy Birthday,
Jadon! A googolplexian hugs and kisses
for you!

Just One of the Reasons...
Just one of the reasons I appreciate my kids' school, Lord Aylmer Elementary:
I mean, how many kids can say they have an igloo to explore at school? Very fun!!!

Time for Another Birthday!
A – Athlete
(He loves
his sports!)
N – Inquisitive
(He
prefers things to be black and white, but he asks great questions.)
D – Determined
(When
he sets his mind to something, watch out!)
R – Responsible
(Yes,
he is an 11-year-old boy; but we have seen significant growth in this area over
the last year! He is the guy you want on your side if you really need a hand.)
E – Expressive
(He can
be a great story-teller and conversationalist; His maturity of emotional
expression continues to advance, too!)
W – Warrior
(After going through the Narnia series this past year, Andrew has really been into the idea of being a warrior – as his name means. He is very strong in many ways, and we pray that he will continue to learn to use his strength and determination to fight the right battles.)
Happy 11th birthday, Champ! We love you like crazy!!!!!
